If you've been told you have a bulging, herniated or “slipped” disc, you can see a chiropractor in Plymouth directly, without a referral.
At Ocean City Chiropractic, in Plymouth city centre (Ground Floor, 3 The Crescent, Plymouth PL1 3AB), Dr Dane Jacks and Dr Freya Soper, Doctors of Chiropractic registered with the General Chiropractic Council, see people with back pain and sciatica linked to disc problems. They examine you fully first. Care may include chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression and exercises to support your lower back.
These are the patterns we hear most often from people with neck-related headaches.
Your discs sit between the bones of your spine, a bit like jam doughnuts: a tough outer ring with a softer centre.
It's just two appointments to get you on the right path. Here's exactly what happens at each so there are no surprises.
Restoring proper movement to the hip, pelvis and lower back
Strengthening the glutes and hip stabilisers so the joint is properly supported
For stubborn tendon problems like GTPS
Correcting how your feet load your hips with every step
The daily habits that keep hips happy
Disc bulges show up on scans of many people with no back pain at all: around 3 in 10 people in their twenties and more than 8 in 10 by their eighties. It's why we treat the person, not the scan. For back pain with or without sciatica, NICE recommends manual therapy as part of a package that includes exercise.

Ever since my first visit to Ocean City Chiropractic, I felt at home… I have herniated discs in my lumbar spine and the pain was limiting my mobility and my life…

People often use them to mean the same thing. “Slipped” is misleading, because discs don't slip. A bulge is the outer ring pushing outwards. A herniation is when some of the softer centre pushes through it.
Many do. NICE guidance puts non-surgical care first for most people with back pain and sciatica, and surgery is usually considered only when that hasn't helped. Whether non-surgical care suits you depends on what we find at your examination.
Yes, when it's tailored to you. We run nerve and orthopaedic tests first, then choose techniques that suit your back, including gentle, low-force options and decompression.
It's a gentle, controlled stretch of the spine on a specialist computer-controlled table. Sessions last 30 minutes and you stay fully clothed. We only offer it after a full consultation and examination, and if we don't think it's right for you, we'll say so.
No. We examine you properly first. If a scan would change what we do, we'll tell you, and we can arrange a private MRI with a full explanation of the results.
Single sessions are £70. Most people follow 12-session phase plans, which work out at £39 a session (£468 a phase). We'll only recommend it after your initial consultation, which is £65.
All three are regulated professions you can see directly, and all can help with a disc problem. What matters most is someone who examines you properly, explains what's going on and gives you a plan that includes what you can do yourself. At Ocean City Chiropractic you'll see a chiropractor, and our sports therapist too if that suits you better. There's more on this in our guide: chiropractor, physio or osteopath?
No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare professionals, so you can book directly with us. Book online or call 01752 921 931.
