Swimming in the ocean has a range of physical and mental health benefits. As sea swimmers ourselves we appreciate that although it can be a challenge to plunge yourself into cold waters, the benefits are completely worth it.
It’s free physical exercise: Swimming in the sea provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. It engages various muscle groups, including the legs, arms, core, and back, helping to build strength and endurance.
It can be as low impact as you like, which means it is gentle on the joints. It’s an excellent option for people with joint problems or those recovering from injuries.
It Improves Circulation: The buoyancy of seawater and the pressure it exerts on the body can enhance blood circulation, potentially benefiting heart health.
Breathing in the fresh sea air and engaging in rhythmic breathing while swimming can help improve with circulation and also improve lung function and increase lung capacity.
It helps reduce physical and mental stress: The calming sound of the waves, the sensation of floating, and the connection with nature can reduce stress and promote relaxation. Sea swimming is often associated with increased feelings of well-being and reduced anxiety.
The exercise element along with the cold also releases feel good hormones so there really is no way you can get out of the sea in a bad mood. Being in the ocean allows for a deeper connection with nature. The sights, sounds, and sensations of the sea can be a source of inspiration and relaxation and boosts mood and reduces depression.
After we have been in the sea we feel energised and invigorated for hours. We would urge anyone who is thinking about it, to just try it. We have listed some of our favourite spots below to help you with the challenge.
When it comes to sea swimming spots in the UK, we think our beautiful coastal city of Plymouth really shines.
Everyone has their preferences for sea swimming depending on their ability, where they feel safe, and also depending on how much time they have. But, whether it’s a day out at a local beach for a dip or a morning swim before work at a hidden bay, Plymouth has a great range of options for everyone.
Dive into our top picks:
There is a splash-worthy spot for everyone. Read on to help plan your next dip in Plymouth!
We love Plymouth Hoe and are lucky enough to be just a few minutes walk away from Tinside Beach East. This is our favourite spot for sea swimming as its a quick and convenient way for us to get the benefits whilst fitting it easily into our daily routine.
Tinside Beach is situated just below The Terrace Café on Madeira Road and is a very popular sea swimming spot for people all year round. It’s an all-tide-friendly beach, though high tide is most recommended. It’s a good idea to bring swim shoes as the beach is pebbly.
There is a hot shower available outside and some lockers if you are coming alone (please always remember to wear a float if you are a solo swimmer).
This is a really safe bay to swim in with yellow buoys and even pontoons in the summer months that you can swim out to. As we have said, people swim here safely all year around. If you fancy company, you can join the regulars on Saturday mornings between 6am and 9am (you might see us there!)
? Parking Tip: You can use the on-street pay and display nearby. Longer stays? Check out Elphinstone car park, Lambhay Hill, or Grand Parade.
If swimming in open water isn’t for you then a Lido is a great option. You will still get all of the benefits of sea swimming but you have the comfort and safety of a pool like set up with showers and changing rooms and a lifeguard.
We have loved seeing the Lido so busy over the summer. It is like stepping back in time when you see the charm of the 1935 Art Deco Tinside Lido. Overlooking the stunning Plymouth Sound and nestled beside Plymouth Hoe and Smeaton’s Tower, it’s a summer sanctuary from May to September.
Regular sessions are run throughout the day which you can book online or simply show up and pay on the day. Prices and sessions vary so it’s always best to check online before visiting or if you are walking by, they have all of the information you need right outside.
Nestled to the West of Plymouth Sound, Firestone Bay boasts picturesque views of Mount Edgcumbe and Drake’s Island. We love the views from here, especially at sunrise on a summers morning.
Again, this spot is hugely popular with regular sea swimmers so you will feel a real buzz and sense of community if you head along first thing in the morning or in the evening.
Beyond just being a haven for swimmers, snorkelers, and paddleboarders, this small pebble beach also connects to Royal William Yard through a historic archway. While you’re there, don’t miss the nearby tidal pool for a quick toe-dip.
Fun Fact: Firestone is part of the UK’s pioneering National Marine Park!
Devils point is a great spot for sea swimming and has a tidal pool too. There are regular swim classes held here and its a popular spot due to the car parking and the short walk through to Royal Williams Yard where you can warm yourself up with a nice cup of coffee and some breakfast afterwards.
One of the great things about sea swimming is that its is completely free! And guess what? So is Mount Wise Lido. We love that this has remained free to the public to enjoy with their families.
It is one of the UK’s top outdoor swimming complexes boasting three fabulous pools.
Whether you fancy a serious 25-metre lap, a splash amidst fountains, or a bubbly whirlpool experience, there’s something for everyone.
Kids can delight in the paddling pool, building water confidence too. All this with breathtaking views across the Tamar River, what an amazing free day out for all the family!
The historic maritime city of Plymouth is a great haven for sea-swiming enthusiasts.
From the bustling atmosphere of Tinside Beach East to the historic charm of Firestone Bay, there’s a waterside experience awaiting every kind of swimmer.
So, whether you’re taking your first dip or your a seasoned sea-swimmer, Plymouth’s sea swims spots and community welcome you with open arms. Dive in and let the waves of Plymouth refresh your spirit!
